(Winner posted below)
Music is big in our house. And thankfully the children seem to have inherited their musical ability from their father.
You may have landed on this page via the back story on my extensive musical upbringing, that saga can be found here.
Anyhoo, I had been looking for a DVD series that I could use to teach the kids guitar. Recently I was contacted by the nice people at Jean Welles Worship Guitar. They have a number of different series of guitar lessons on DVD, to suit your family’s needs.
They sent me the DVD Jean Welles Worship Guitar Class, Volume One. The thing that I most like about the way this is laid out, is that it will have you immediately strumming a two chord song in your first lesson.

The lessons are easy to follow, and there is an instructional booklet that shows correct finger placement and has the words to the songs printed out with the chords above the words.
It’s very much like the sheet music that I used in the guitar mass 150 years ago when I was a teenager. The songs are bringing back WONDERFUL memories.
Since the lessons are on DVD, you can proceed at your own pace. Taking time to practice before moving on.
The primary music that is broadcast in our house is praise music. And I love that the kids are learning songs that they can sing and play along with.
Volume One contains 7 lessons, plus a section on the different parts of the guitar and even a section on HOW TO TUNE YOUR GUITAR. Without a tuning fork or blowey thingy (technical musical terminology). I never knew how to do that before! As you might imagine, I will be learning the RIGHT way to play a guitar, right along with the children.
They also offer a Worship Guitar Class specifically for Kids. This is a 2 1/2 DVD and eBook with 9 easy to follow lessons. It’s geared for ages 5 and up.

Church camp in the 80s would not have been the same without “Pass it On”!!!
I went to a very old-school, traditional church in the days before KLove and Air1. “Awesome God” by Carmen (Carman? Karman? sp?) was about as far as we got from the traditional hymns.
We have a guitar sitting here and no one in our house has a clue how to play it!
I went to a small Baptist church as a child and we sang Awesome God all the time in our little youth group. Still love the song even today.
Oh, do I ever have a budding little rock star on my hands. He wants to play drums. Maybe I can sway him with some guitar lessons…
Majesty. Hands down, no contest. I will now have it in my head all day, which is an awesome thing!
I”m so old that “Pass It On” was just about ‘it’ for us. And boy did we feel like rebels singing that with our Farrah winged hair. LOL
Anything by the Gaither Trio was hip in our church(es) growing up. We moved alot. Now of course I can hear the songs in my head but can’t remember any of the titles. But Southern Gospel was just putting out “praise choruses” back then which was a big deal in our Southern Baptist churches. Mom always said we were Bapticostal though.
“Zaccheaus Was A Wee Little Man” and from all accounts, I drove my parents crazy singing that song. Many, many years later my dad carved a pen for me out of a sycamore tree in remembrance of the song. I am just glad they did not teach it to my children!
Remember this one?
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart.
WHERE?
I sang that on a never ending loop through 1st grade.
My hubs would love this. He’s been attempting to teach himself guitar for a few years, and no matter how good he gets on Wii Rock Band, the skill does not seem to transfer!
Ooooh! i just got my 5yo son a guitar for Christmas! My favorite worship song as a kid? probably have to go with the crowds and say Awesome God.
Mine was “Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam”. Unfortunately, for the longest time, I thought it said “Jesus wants me for a ZOMBIE”. My parents were not pleased to hear me singing that and had to go to the children’s ministry leader to find out exactly what they were teaching those classes.
P.S. My sons got a guitar for Christmas, but seeing as how I took piano lessons a hundred years ago, and dh sings loud, flat, and offbeat, we have been looking for a music curr! This is great!
I’m not sure that we had “praise” songs back in my day, but my favorite was “This is My Father’s World” because I had to play the piano, and that was one that I felt comfortable with! The kids in my SS class now are really enjoying “Awesome God.”
Well, having grown up in a Southern Baptist church, we had pianos and organs. No guitars. And after much thought I think I must have been in high school before I knew anyone who honest-to-goodness owned and played a guitar. Sad. But that doesn’t answer the question of my favorite childhood worship song….hmmmm… Zaccheus, I think. And now my kids have learned it and belt it out. The way it should always be sung. Praise song? Probably not. But there you go!
“Zaccheus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he!”
We did not attend church on a regular basis as a child and I only remember singing hymns in the service. However, we did go to church camp a couple of times and I liked the song “I am a c-h-r-i-s-t-i-a-n”.
My in-laws got my 7 year old a guitar for Christmas, so he would love to learn to play as we are a non-musical family and I cannot teach him!
Holy, Holy, Holy and Onward Christian Soldiers are my 2 favorites

this would totally come in handy as both boys got acoustic guitars last christmas and electric ones this Christmas.
All those years of childrens choir practices and all I can remember is “Rise and shiiine and Give God the Glory glory…”
My fav hymn of all time though is The Old Rugged Cross.
Will tweet as soon as I figure out how.

Oh, How He Loves You and Me.
My son has a guitar and is wanting to learn. This would be a great starting point.
Sanctuary- I still love that song.
I only got to attend church as a child for a very short time, and only remember one song from that time. I don’t know the actual name of it, but I always thought of it as the “Countdown” song.
Somewhere in outer space
God has prepared a place
For those who trust Him and obey.
Jesus will come again
And though we don’t know when
The countdown’s getting lower every day.
Ten and nine, eight and seven
Six and five and four
Call upon your Savior while you may.
Three and two, coming through
The clouds of bright or gray.
The countdown’s getting lower every day.
“I am a C. I am a C-H. I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N… And I have C-H-R-I-S-T in my H-E-A-R-T and I will L-I-V-E E-T-E-R-N-A-L-L-Y….!”
As fast as we could possibly sing it and still spell everything right! haha
I REALLY hope I win! I so badly want to learn to play the guitar!!
