Pillow Talk

by Fiddledeedee on May 19, 2009

I have been a customer and fan of Select Comfort for the last 10 years.  We now have 4 of their mattresses in our home.  (And yes, they can even be used on bunk beds.)

I had the good fortune to review Select Comfort and offer a Pet Bed for one of my readers last year.  To read that review, click here.

Select Comfort contacted me again in April, and asked if I’d like to review their “Create Your Perfect Pillow” pillow.  WOULD I? Little did they know that I’d been coveting one of those pillows for a good two years.

The idea behind “Create Your Perfect Pillow” is that the customer can design a pillow that meets their own particular sleep need.

I don’t know about you.  But I’m a little obsessive about my pillow.

There are three parts to this pillow:  The Outer cover, the inner support, and the protector.  And there are many choices within the three parts.  The one you chose has everything to do with criteria such as for example 1) are you a side or back sleeper, 2) do you suffer from allergies, 3) how much support do you look for in a pillow.

I was able to talk to Jill, who is a sleep expert at Select Comfort, and together we designed the perfect pillow for me.

I wish I could be called a “sleep expert.”  I’m more of a sleep deprived expert of nothing in particular.  But I digress.

My pillow arrived a couple of weeks later.

Let me just say.  ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

And choruses of angels sang me to sleep.

I’ve banished my old favorite pillow to the floor.  My new Select Comfort pillow is wonderful.  And I’m one of those people who takes their pillow with them on trips because I don’t sleep without it.  (I’m also not so fond of sleeping on nasty old hotel pillows.)

A good nights sleep is imperative for a busy mommy who juggles homeschooling, a job, 3 high strung children, and a household.

If I could just convince my 4 year old that his mommy really would be SO much nicer if she were able to sleep all night, everything would be AWESOME.

Since that particular son has allergies, I found the following article by Pete Bils, Director of Clinical Research and Sleep Innovation at Select Comfort extremely enlightening.  I want to share it with you in its entirety, because there is some REALLY good information therein.

Bedroom Tips for Allergy Sufferers

The spring and summer months bring sunshine, but also a lot of grief to the estimated 50 million Americans who suffer with allergies. And, of these 50 million, seventy-five percent of people with seasonal allergies report sleep disturbances because the sheer discomfort makes it hard for them to sleep. Their body is constantly waking or shifting positions to alleviate fluid build-up, plus the tendency to snore increases, which can result in up to 40 percent more subtle sleep disturbances and, ultimately, diminished quality of sleep.

Unfortunately, the bedroom is one of the most “polluted” rooms in the house and presents some especially difficult and sometimes overlooked challenges for allergy sufferers. For example, we spend long, uninterrupted hours in the bedroom, breathing in the same air. Many bedrooms are closed off and can become stagnant, away form better circulation and ventilation. Additionally, there are many opportunities for allergens to thrive in bedding, upholstery, carpeting, draperies and clothing. Also, while sleeping, we are in close, constant contact with our beds, a particularly active environment for allergens.

If you’ve woken up with congestion, watery and itchy eyes, or simply want to reduce the effects of allergens, consider the below tips to help rid your bedroom of allergens.

1.    Clean your bedroom weekly. This includes floors, furniture, tops of doors, window frames/sills, etc. with a damp cloth.
2.    Vacuum carpet and upholstery regularly.
3.    Vacuum bed upholstery. Better yet, get a bed, like the Sleep Number bed which allows you to actually open and vacuum the inside of your bed too.
4.    Wash curtains often and bedding weekly at 130+ degrees to kill dust mites.
5.    Use allergen barrier covers for your mattress and pillows.
6.    Undress in another room to avoid bringing outside allergens into the bedroom.
7.    Keep pets out of the bedroom.
8.    Keep room at humidity below 50 percent to reduce dust mite population and mold growth.
9.    Regularly launder stuffed animals.
10.    Use a high quality HEPA air filter in the bedroom.

If you need a new bed, consider the Sleep Number bed by Select Comfort which offers numerous advantages for allergy sufferers. Sleep Number mattresses use the latest anti-microbial treatments in all foams, and all bed covers are treated to be anti-microbial and anti-fungal.  Additionally, unlike traditional innerspring mattresses, the Sleep Number bed has a unique zip-open design that allows you to easily open and view the inside of your bed, and ventilate or vacuum, if you choose.  A complete line of hypoallergenic Sleep Number bedding accessories is also available, including bed pillows, pillow protectors, mattress pads, blankets and comforters. We have the bed too. I’d like the memory foam with down alternative and the in blalance protector.

Tara May 19, 2009 at 7:11 am

I forgot what I chose. I think it had to do with solid gold because it turned out to be $169. :)

Sandra in Phx May 19, 2009 at 8:01 am

Down alternative and then the Inbalance protector because this is Phoenix, for heaven’s sake! LOL

Jenny May 19, 2009 at 8:36 am

I like memory foam. I always take my pillows on vacation too. I’ve put them in those vacuum bag things so that I can fit them in my suitcase.

His Girl Amber May 19, 2009 at 8:49 am

I can’t even imagine feathery goodness, neck support, AND temperature control, but that’s what I ended up with. Sadly, if I don’t win, it will make me a little bitter about sleeping on my regular, boring, pillow that has none of those awesome features.

Kathryn May 19, 2009 at 9:39 am

I am DESPARATE for a new pillow – I have a husband who is a “pillow hoarder” and I have trouble snagging a few for my use.

I chose the silver for all three portions because it was the least firm and how cool is 5% of SILVER in my PILLOW!!! Shapable and fresh too!!

Rebecca May 19, 2009 at 9:41 am

I got the down alternative, with the memory foam. I can’t imagine having a pillow that is soft enough for my face, but firm enough for my neck. That would be heavenly.

Dawn W May 19, 2009 at 10:51 am

Down alternative and memory foam with a little silver thrown in… all total to $144. I hope I win ’cause I’m not gonna be able to sell that pillow to the hubby! Ha!

Lori May 19, 2009 at 11:02 am

Memory Foam, down alternative and in balance. Totaling $144.

Really one pillow for $144 does it do my hair while I sleep also? =)))

Karen Hall May 19, 2009 at 11:36 am

I chose the down alternative for outer comfort, memory foam for inner support and the cotton protector:) The perfect pillow!!

Rebecca May 19, 2009 at 12:20 pm

I chose the memory foam for outer and inner and the silver protector.

fern May 19, 2009 at 12:36 pm

I chose the memory foam for inner core and down alternative for the outer. sounds comfy!

Brandy May 19, 2009 at 12:38 pm

My very special dream pillow has a down alternative inner and outer and has a silver protector. I think I would adore this pillow and be reluctant to ever leave the bed.

Carrie May 19, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Wow, my pillow costs $144.97!!! Crazy!!! But I picked the memory foam outer comfort, the memory foam contour support, and the cotton protector. They look really nice! :)

Mary in AZ May 19, 2009 at 2:33 pm

Wow. Apparently, I’m a pillow snob.;) At $219, the very thought of it makes me breathe deeply! Down outer and inner with an in balance protector for this girl. I suspect that the temp controlled outer cover would rock my world. It sounds divine.

Heidi Lambeth May 19, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Standard size; Down Alternative with Inbalance protector!

cool momma May 19, 2009 at 6:49 pm

King, Silver, Memory , in balance….only for……….$219
This would be sooooo awesome!

Katherine May 19, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Silver outer…. memory foam inner…. in balance….all that sounds too good to be true. I hate it when my pillow feels hot.

Laurie in TN May 19, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Memory Foam with pressure point relief and Silver protector that conforms to me (not my husband’s arm). My neck hurts and I need support while I sleep!

angie May 19, 2009 at 9:02 pm

It’s about time to replace the Select Comfort that my husband got me five years ago.

kiy May 20, 2009 at 12:05 am

This was fun, who knew all those kinds of choices were available on a …. pillow?! I went with silver, silver and in balance. I love the idea of temp control as I get so darned tootin’ hot at night.

Crossing my fingers! Thanks for a great giveaway,

Kiy

Carrie May 20, 2009 at 8:18 am

I chose a standard pillow with memory foam outer comfort, a memory foam contour and a cotton protector. It sounds wonderful.

susan May 20, 2009 at 11:02 am

My sleep number is 30-35 depending on how tired I am—my dream pillow would be down alternative around memory foam with in balance protector.

Fingers and toes crossed.

Need A Nap2 May 20, 2009 at 1:32 pm

standard size – memory foam, memory foam, cotton. Sounds wonderful!!

Myamos May 20, 2009 at 3:36 pm

I love the down alternative- my fave- and breathable cotton- So nice! Hope I win one:)

karyn May 20, 2009 at 7:48 pm

OK, I’m crossing my fingers. Memory foam outer, memory foam inner and in balance protector with temp. balancing. $219!!! Let’s hope the angels sing for my husband. 10 years of insomnia….yikes. he’s finally getting good help, now if only the pillow was the mattress! And will I be selfless enough to not use the pillow for myself if I win???hmmm!

Amiee May 20, 2009 at 9:46 pm

I chose silver, silver, and in balance. Thanks =]

Fiona May 20, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Wow… dreams tonight of the perfect pillow. Down, Contour and In Balance… Sleep sweet! Thanks for the contest.

Kelly May 21, 2009 at 7:59 am

I love the feathers, the silver, and the allergy reducing combo. I have been looking for a new pillow!

Rachel May 21, 2009 at 12:04 pm

I just slept at a Marriott hotel that had down pillows with feather inserts and they were wonderful. So I’d pick one of down outer/feather inner with the In Balance thingy because there’s nothing better than a cool pillow in the middle of the night.

Kelly May 21, 2009 at 12:32 pm

I like the down pillow, but what sold me was the temperature balancing technology! That would be sublime! We have had our Select Comfort bed for 12 years and have referred 4 other family members and friends. We even found a vacation spot in the N. Ga Mtns that has Select Comfort beds!!

Megan May 21, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Looks like I chose an expensive one…$169! King size, down, feather and silver…I think I am in love!
Thanks for the great giveaway!

Marti May 21, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Memory foam inner and outer with the in balance protector standard size. Oh how I long for a night of great sleep.

Gina May 21, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I love down. And I love the idea of the temperature control.

Suzanne May 22, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Silver, memory foam, and temperature control. Hook me up!

Paige May 22, 2009 at 3:02 pm

They lost me at the first step. Clean room weekly. That doesn’t really get done. But I could still use a pillow. Wow. The pillow I designed came to $219. Who knew a pillow could cost that much?

Stephanie May 23, 2009 at 5:17 pm

You were right! This WAS fun.

I chose the king size pillow with down outer comfort, feather inner support, and in-balance protector.
